The "Young Pioneers" was an important youth organization of the Soviet Union for boys and girls between the ages of 9?15 that existed between 1922 and 1991. Similar to the Scouting programs that existed before the Revolution and the Boys and Girl Scouts of the West, Pioneers learned both cooperation and nature skills by attending State-funded summer camps. Acquiring the "red scarf," the symbol of the Pioneers, was a Soviet rite of passage.
