In 1937, the one hundredth anniversary of the death of Alexander Pushkin, the Soviet government organized a series of events and celebrations of the famous poet which focused on his work and its contemporary relevance in the Soviet Union. Sculptor Natalia Danko created this model of the poet at work in his library, surrounded by foreign books and periodicals instantly recognizable to educated Soviets.
