A Spanish Walnut Refectory Table

17th Century

Height 34 x width 95 x depth 33 inches.

Sold to Benefit the Acquisition Fund of the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields European Furniture & Decorative Arts
Sturdy and attractive condition; apparently mostly original. The top with two very wide age cracks, one of which has been reinforced with a later wood brace added to the underside. Old, dark discolorations, worm holes, stains, heat and water marks, dents and other "scars" as is normal for this type of furniture. One drawer appears to be locked with no key and cannot be opened. One side's legs have fewer worm holes and "scars" than the opposite legs, so they might be older replacements, but we are unsure. The stretcher shows significant wear and age, but we are also unsure if it is original since it has less discoloration and wood deterioration than the top. The lock hardware is missing from the drawer that can be opened. Some of the drawer pulls (metal) are missing. A false drawer front seems to be missing from the back side of the table. Additional images available upon request.
