The fossils of the Silurian-age Rochester Shale were originally noted during the construction of the Erie Canal, which took place from 1814 until 1825. Rather than being celebrated at that time, however, the discovery of these 420-million-year-old specimens generated confusion and consternation among members of the scientific community. Quite simply, noone had previously seen a treasure trove of material of that kind, and few, if any, knew what to make of these fossil riches. Some of the earliest scientific descriptions of many prehistoric genera were based on discoveries made in this renowned Paleozoic locale in Western New York State. And, of all the trilobites found in this historic area, none possess the academic value nor the collectable panache of Arctinurus boltini. The present overlapping multiple specimen is particularly significant considering the rarity — and inherent beauty — of this large lichid. Measuring 8 ½ x 8 7/8in
