A Swept-Hilt Rapier of Pappenheim Type
A thrusting blade of diamond section with a short single fuller in the middle on both sides. Characteristical iron cup-guard hilt with a pair of concave plates pierced with a lot of tiny round openings. S-shaped quillons with animal's head finials. Wooden grip covered with fish skin (later). Ovoid pommel with fine flutes and slightly chiselled eight rows of raised decorative knobs. Germany, the 1st guarter of the 17th century, length 131 cm. A type of rapier known as a "Pappenheimer" so called because this form of pierced basket hilt was favoured by Gottfried Heinrich, Graf Pappenheim. Condition 2+
