A TEN-PANEL FOLDING SCREEN LANDSCAPE

[ translate ]

A TEN-PANEL FOLDING SCREEN LANDSCAPE
Korea, late 19th century/early 20th century, ink and light color on silk, divided into two folding screens of four and six panels, each inscribed with two seals, including a floral pattern seal and another reading, "Eun-gye,"
overall 61 7/8 x 145, each 61 x 14 1/2, painting 42 3/4 x 12 1/2 in.
Provenance: Private collection in Connecticut, formed in Korea during 1953-57 when the current owner was teaching at a university and working in Cultural Affairs at the American Embassy.

Note: The artist using, "Eun-gye," as his style name has been identified in a record as Yi Cheong-jing (1792-1862), but the record is not yet confirmed as true in the Korean academia, due to the limited number of comparable examples. Korea has so far identified two true-view landscape folding screens as works by Eun-gye, which are housed in two museums. The artist is described as a professional painter at one of the museums while as a literati artist at the other, making the identification of the artist more complicated. (Reference: Kho, Youen-hee, "A Study on Twelve Panel-Screen Painting of 'Wuyi Mountain's Nine Bends' at the Gahoe Minhwa Museum," December 2021)
