(A) THOMAS CHERRINGTON PERCUSSION TARGET RIFLE.

Exquisite heavy target rifle made by Thomas Cherrington Jr. Ashland, Pennsylvania circa 1860. Cherrington was a fine workman having worked with his father then worked for William Billingshurst, the noted master target rifle maker in New York. This gun is second to none with a heavy full octagon barrel machined for a false muzzle and measuring 1-1/2" across muzzle flats and weighing over 20lbs. Barrel has a brass globe front sight with added brass tube that can be used as a sighting tube or removed to use just the globe sight, held in place by a gunsmith made carriage with thumbscrew tightener. Barrel has affixed mount for bench rest near muzzle. Barrel is marked "T.P. Cherrington Ashland, Pa." and fitted with patent breech ignition system with back action lock and single set trigger control. Walnut checkered pistol grip stock with steel shotgun style butt. Pistol grip is capped with steel cap with the name "W.H. Smith" stamped across. Gun has ramrod pipes with hardwood ramrod. CONDITION: Metal fading to a silvery brown patina with patent breech remaining a dark shade of blue. Action has faded to a silvery patina. Wood has 80% original high gloss varnish with sharp checkering and usage marks and dings. Excellent bore with good mechanics. A super target rifle of the day!
