A TORTOISESHELL SINGING BIRD BOX, FRÈRES ROCHAT, GENEVA, PROBABLY CIRCA 1845

rectangular, gold piqué line border, the oval lid painted on the exterior with an Alpine view and on the interior with flowers, opening to reveal a small feathered bird automaton singing, opening and closing its ivory beak, and flapping its wings; the movement numbered 144 within three tulips in a triangle for Frères Rochat,

9.4cm., 3¾in. wide

Condition Report:
Gold border slightly losse in two places, some light surface wear to tortoiseshell; small crack in front right corner, possibly small restoration to the enamel close to the hinge; very small losses to enamel on the inside of the lid; the movement fully working at time of cataloguing. Sotheby's does not guarantee the functioning of movements.
