A Tibetan Thangka Style Painted River Stone with a Protective Deity, 81BC
Painted on a naturally rounded, teardrop-shaped river stone, the work depicts a protective deity in a thangka-style composition. The figure is shown with a blue-black countenance, wearing a crown decorated with skull motifs and a three-eyed design, the head and body adorned with complex patterning in red, green and gold. The palette is applied in an opaque, layered manner over the natural stone surface, with rich, archaic color and fine workmanship. Stylistically, the painting follows Tibetan Buddhist thangka conventions and is likely of twentieth-century date, executed as a devotional or decorative object. The stone is supported by a dark wooden stand. Height 13 cm (5 1/8 in.), width 8 cm (3 1/8 in.).
