A Tibetan parcel gilt bronze statue of Shadbhuja Vajra Mahakala
Early 20th Century
The wrathful deity wearing five point skull crown standing in alidhasana with both feet stepping on Gaṇapatihṛdayā over a lotus base, bearing a vajra lasso, damaru and a skull cup in his hands, adorned with incised tiger-skin dhoti and garland of severed heads, surrounded by flames, 40 cm high, 32 cm wide.

The Shadbhuja (six handed) form of Mahakala is a wrathful emanation of Avalokiteśvara and belongs to the Kriya classification of Tantra, which is the lowest class tantra that are taught for practitioners of lower ability, usually including the performance of external ritual activities for protection and purification purposes. This form was popularised in Tibet in the 11th century.
