A Tibetan thangka with a learned master seated on a throne and flanked by two students/masters on smaller thrones, in front of him a table upon where, a.o., damaru, vajra, kapala are placed. Above him Chenrezig, Amithaba and Padmasambhava, below the protectors Rahula, Mahakala and Dorje Legpa. Verso with Tibetan text. 19th century. Image 55×38 cm.

Under the master a Tibetan inscription identifies him as Kongpo Bamteng Tulku, not to be mistaken with Jamgön Kongtrul Lodrö Thaye who was also known as Kongpo Bamteng Tulku. He is flanked by two students/masters with inscriptions identifying them as Jampal Yeshe and Kunzang Gyatso.

Verso with inscription: Om Swasti! The immortal Padmasambhava, whose nature is the three ‘bodies’ (kâya) Once again came [into the world] as the one known as ‘Bam steng’, He has the ability to cause the two assemblages to become excellently achieved, And all connection with him is fruitful. To him I pray from the heart. Please grant spontaneously the two spiritual benefits [i.e., those for oneself and others].

Lord, in whatever realm you may dwell in the ten directions, May you permanently dwell in this image, With no differentiation of the ‘vowed one’ (dam tshig sems dpa’) And the ‘transcendant awareness one’ (ye shes sems dpa’). And through your connection with me, The faithful patron, May you grant immediately the highest and common attainments (siddhis).

Based on my faithful, Yearning supplication of you Who are a pair of glorious masters (=Bam steng + Padmasambhava?) And who indistinguishable from the Buddha (jina), May you dwell here in this image And being unseparated until Bodhi is reached, May you gauge upon me with compassion, And grant me the highest and common [attainment].
