The Buddhist scholar modelled seated in padmasana on a double-lotus base, the hands in dharmachakra mudra, wearing patchwork robes with incised cloud pattern at the hem, the face covered in cold gold paste and with downcast eyes, the hair cropped short, and with colour, the base sealed and incised with a double vajra. Period: ca. 1800. Height: 33.5 cm.
Tsongkhapa (b.1357) was a highly respected Buddhist scholar and is regarded as the founder of the Gelug Buddhist sect. He is revered as an incarnation of the bodhisattva Manjushri.
