A Transition toilet mirror with a single drawer - Brass, Mahogany - 1770-1780

[ translate ]

The design of this rare and elegant toiletry mirror is still typical of the Louis XV period, but is no longer heavily curved and more elegant in shape. The perfect symmetry and the round ring fittings decorated with flowers/rosettes already indicate the new style of the Louis XVI period. Because of the combination of the old and new styles, this toiletry mirror is made during the (short) Dutch transitional period of Louis XV to Louis XVI, the so-called Transition Period around 1770-1780.

. The toiletry mirror is made of oak and mahogany and glued with mahogany veneer. Very beautiful mahogany veneer was selected for the veneered surfaces with a nice flame pattern and so-called “Oyster shapes” in the front of the drawer! The flame pattern runs from the front side all the way to the top leaf. The single drawer has a round cast and gilded brass ring fittings and key entrance. The round fittings are decorated with flowers/rosettes. The right ring is slightly bigger and the way it is fastened indicates that this is a replacement, but with a copy from this time period! The drawer also still has the original lock with a working key, not the original. The drawer front is rimmed with refined semi-circular framework. The drawer at the front is glued and nailed (forged) and at the rear constructed with a dovetail connection. The mirror is placed in between the two decorated stands in a frame with contoured top. Around the frame and the front of the semi-circular framework are glued with "crass" mahogany veneer. For (additional) strength, the two stands in between which the mirror is placed, are partly slid in the top leaf by means of a dovetailed connection. The two dovetailed inserts in the quarter round framework are original and glued in it after the stands were in place! On either side of the stands are two brass handles that can be turned loose and tight, so that the mirror can be placed in any desired position/angle.

. The mirror is still original and has the expected scratches and "moldy" spots. The toiletry mirror has a gorgeous deep warm gold-orange-brown colour & patina and very fine silky gloss from the original wax finish! The design, the materials, the colour and lustre make this unique and elegant toiletry mirror a feast for the eyes for real antiques lover!

. The item will be very well packed and shipped insured.
