A Treasury of Scrolls 1955 first edition in Hebrew, preceding English edition titled The Dead Sea Scrolls of the Hebrew University.
Portfolio includes a book with 21 photographs and 30 figures presenting background to the discovery and contents of the scrolls, as well as, a transcription Hebrew typeface of the contents of each of the 58 loose photographic plates, in the portfolio binder. All Plates present: clean, and unworn. Book and plates in near fine shape.
Work is as important as it is sumptuous, for it contains, besides a useful introduction, the long-awaited texts of the Judaean Scrolls in the possession of the Hebrew University at Jerusalem: Isaiah B, the War of the Sons of Light and the Sons of Darkness', and the Thanksgivings.
The book has a 1955 gift dedication signed by Esther Gottesman (1898 - 1997), an American philanthropist and Zionist, daughter of Aaron Garfunkel, a founder of the Federation of Jewish Philanthropies.
Eleazar Lipa Sukenik (Israeli, 1889 - 1953), was an Israeli archaeologist and professor at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He is best known for helping establish the Department of Archaeology at the Hebrew University and being one of the first academics to recognize the age and importance of the Dead Sea Scrolls. He also oversaw the uncovering of the Third Wall of ancient Jerusalem. He also was the director of the Museum of Jewish Antiquities at the Hebrew University.
Sukenik was born in Belostok (today Bialystok, Poland). In 1912, he immigrated to Palestine , graduated Berlin University in 1923 and in 1926 received PhD from Dropsie College in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
He served in the British army in World War I in the 40th Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers, which became known as the Jewish Legion. He was the father of General, politician and archaeologist Yigael Yadin, the actor Yossi Yadin, and Mati Sukenik, one of the first pilots of the Israeli Air Force, killed during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War.
