A Trio of Allertons Graduated Gaudy Welsh Hydra Jugs
A set of three graduated octagonal earthenware jugs manufactured by Allertons Ltd in Longton, Staffordshire, England. The set includes:
The largest jug features an octagonal body with a scalloped rim and a green serpent or hydra handle, terminating in a moulded man's head. The body is decorated with a polychrome Gaudy Welsh style floral pattern in iron red, cobalt blue, green, and purple enamels. The base bears a printed black mark featuring an ornate scrollwork border with the text Allertons EST. 1831 inside, and MADE IN ENGLAND printed below.
The medium-sized jug follows the same octagonal form and hydra handle design. The hand-painted decoration is consistent with the larger example, featuring floral sprays on a white ground and a wide band of underglaze cobalt blue around the lower portion with gilded scrollwork highlights. The base displays the identical Allertons printed manufacturer's mark.
The smallest jug completes the graduated set, sharing the same form, handle, and polychrome enamel decoration. The interior of the scalloped rim is finished with small floral sprays. The base is marked with the same Allertons EST. 1831 cartouche and MADE IN ENGLAND text.
More Information
The set is in generally good condition with some visible age-related wear. The largest jug exhibits significant crazing across the entire glaze surface and a vertical hairline crack is visible on both the interior and exterior of the body near the handle attachment (photo 1). The medium jug shows general glaze crazing and minor wear to the gilded highlights on the cobalt blue base band (photo 1). The smallest jug has general glaze crazing and a small glaze flake or chip on the foot rim (photo 6). No professional repairs are visible.
