A Trio of Victorian Style Jackfield Jet Ware Type Glazed Earthenware Teaware

A set of three Victorian style glazed earthenware pieces, manufactured in the Jackfield tradition, likely dating from the late 19th or early 20th century. The collection comprises:

A lidded syrup or water jug featuring a tapered, faceted body with a scrolled handle and scalloped rim. It is finished in a high-gloss black glaze with hand-painted polychrome enamel floral sprays in yellow, pink, and purple. The jug is fitted with a hinged metal lid, possibly pewter, embossed with a foliate motif and featuring a thumb-lift. The underside is marked with hand-painted characters reading 5 / 2 and a separate 2.

A teapot of low-slung, faceted form with a curved spout and scrolled handle. The exterior is decorated with matching hand-painted floral enamels and heavy gilded sponging to the handle, spout, and rims. The lid features a small molded finial and reveals a redware body on the unglazed inner rim. The base is marked with the painted characters 5 1 2 and shows several small circular kiln stilt indentations.

An oval ceramic teapot stand or trivet with a scalloped edge. The central black glazed surface is decorated with four hand-painted floral sprigs, bordered by a gilded rim with a sponged finish. The underside is finished in a plain black glaze.

More Information

The set shows significant wear to the gilded sponging on the handles, rims, and spouts of all three pieces (photo 1). The teapot has a visible chip to the tip of the spout (photo 15) and light interior staining (photo 14). The jug's metal lid shows oxidation and tarnishing consistent with age (photo 2), and there are minor surface scratches to the black glaze on the body (photo 3). The stand exhibits moderate surface wear and rubbing to the central enamel decoration and gilded border (photo 10).
