A Venetian Or Dalmatian Shiavona, 18th Century
With tapering double-edge blade with shallow central fuller over each side of the forte struck with a bladesmith's mark, characteristic iron guard comprising a fan-shaped arrangement of four bars, each pinched-in and joined at the top to a wide flat bar with three rows of chevron-like piercings, inner guard of a similar arrangement of slightly swelling flat bars, each linked together and probably originally enclosing a thumb-ring, rear quillon with button terminal, guard with bent-over terminal en suite, later wooden grip, and brass shield-shaped pommel cast with a rosette on each side (old surface rust)
