A Victorian brass cased aneroid barometer J. Hicks, London, third quarter of the 19th century The 4.125 inch circular silvered register calibrated in barometric inches, the upper margin of the centre with the usual observations over the text Compensated and signature J. Hicks, Maker, London, 9560 to lower margin, the circular glass fitted with a brass recording pointer retained in a moulded brass case with suspension loop, diameter 11.5cm (4.5ins). Provenance: Private collection, Hampshire (ref. B67); purchased from A.W. Porter and Son, Hartley Wintney, 11th March 1997 for £160. James Joseph Hicks is recorded in Banfield, Edwin BAROMETER MAKERS AND RETAILERS 1660-1900 as working from Hatton Garden, London from 1861 until after 1900. He was a committed Catholic who presented various meteorological instruments to the Vatican receiving the title of Knight Commander of St. Gregory for his services.
