A Victorian silver novelty pen wipe

[ translate ]

A Victorian silver novelty pen wipe, possible mark of Jane Brownett, London 1889, in the form of a standing boar with curled tusks, the back with bristle insert, monogrammed to the side, signed to the rump PERCY EDWARDS & CO 71 PICCADILLY. W. 10.5 x 3.5cm, 273.4g (8.7ozt) gross When using a quill, dip or fountain pen with a metal nib, a pen wipe helped keep the pen tip clean and free from clogs created by a build-up of dried ink, thereby ensuring smooth, blot-free writing. Although silver models of sows are not uncommon both as pen wipes and pin cushions, it is unusual to see a model of a boar, particularly one of this size.
