A Vienna porcelain cup with Daedalos and Icarus
Cylindrical form with original saucer. The cup finely painted with a scene from Ovid's Metamorphoses. Blue "bindenschild" mark, year stamp 811, red 22, purple 31. (cup), iiiP in lustre, pressnummers. Gold retouches to the top of the handle.

The painting upon which this motif is presumably based is a work by Joseph Marie Vien (1716 - 1809) "Dédale dans le Labyrinthe attachant les ailes à Icare" which is currently housed in the Louvre (inv. no. 8418). It was published as an engraving by Johann Georg Preislers under the title "Dédale et Icare" in 1787.
