Reynell Pack in uniform, 35cm x 25cm Catalogue Note: Heber Reynell-Pack; born 1916; joined 1925; died 1940; Dunkirk Memorial, Column 31; Lieutenant 71090, 3rd Bn Grenadier Guards, 21/05/1940The following is recorded on the ww2guards.com website: Bailleul, May 21st, 1940. At 11.30am, No.3 Company were ordered to counter-attack, but the men were mown down by hidden machine guns. In the counter-attack, Capt R E Abel-Smith, Lt H Reynell-Pack and Lt The Duke of Northumberland were killed. It was during this action that Lance-Corporal Harry Smith was awarded a VC. Smith was heavily wounded and captured, but reported dead. His widow collected the VC from the King and it was not till the end of the War that Smith was released from POW camp. He was presented with his VC by the King, the only occasion where a VC has been presented twice.
