A ZAND LACQUER PAPIER-MÂCHÉ PEN CASE (QALAMDAN)
Iran, dated 1201 AH (1787 AD)
Of oblong form with a sliding tray, the exterior finely painted on the top with a crowded scene featuring figures and animals; the sides decorated with knights within ogival cartouches separated by gilded floral motifs on a dark ground, the same scrolling motifs also border the base, fitted with silver and white-metal calligrapher’s tools (ink container and spoons).
24cm long
Qalamdans exemplify the fusion of Persian miniature painting and applied decorative arts, combining technical precision with artistic elegance. These objects functioned as both practical writing tools and refined expressions of 19th‑century Persian aesthetic taste.
