Condition Report:
The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. This work is restored and could be hung in its current state. The stretcher is good. The canvas has an old lining, which is stabilizing the paint layer. The varnish is very glossy, but illuminates the darker colors nicely. Large areas of the painting show few, isolated restorations when viewed under ultraviolet light. A concentration of retouches can be seen in the chest of Bacchus, where a few small losses have been retouched. Retouches become more numerous in the left side in the landscape. There are numerous restorations in the area above the castle in the sky. There is a large restoration that runs from the lower sky on the left side down to the darker colors in the lower left corner. Further restorations can be seen above the armor on the ground on the left side. There are retouches along the bottom edge, in the center. All of these restorations seem to be isolated. Otherwise, the condition of the work is good.
