A blue and white Berlin faience vase with Chinoiserie decor

Sturdy, baluster-form vase decorated with figures in a Chinoiserie landscape, including a rider and a figure carrying a parasol. Foliate bands decorate the shoulders and foot. Unglazed, unmarked base. Minor rim chips. H 37 cm.
Manufactory of Anna Maria Molin, 1693 - 1697.

This vase was formerly attributed to the Manufactory of Gerhard Wolbeer until it this attribution was changed to the manufactory that preceeded his in the 2001 catalogue "Herrliche Künste und Manufacturen". This manufactory in the Altes Salzhaus was led by the "Plateelbakker" Gerhard Molin, who emmigrated from Delft in 1690, and continued by his widow Anna upon his death in 1692. The enterprising Anna opened a shop in the so-called "Buden" located on Mühlendamm under the Brückenkolonaden in 1694, very close to the Lempertz office. This relatively well-furnished commercial centre was built after designs by Johann Arnold Nering around 1680 and provided Berlin's merchants and traders with a place to present their wares.

Literature

Cf. cat. Herrliche Künste und Manufacturen, Berlin 2011, no. 6, an identical vase with lid decorated with the same figure in the collection of the Stiftung Berliner Stadtmuseum, inv. no. KGK 87,1.
Cf. Mauter, Die Berliner Fayencemanufakturen, in: Herrliche Künste und Manufacturen, Berlin 2001, p. 14.
