A box with silver-plated mounts by Abraham Roentgen
Mahogany, cherry, satinwood and ebony veneers on solid cherry and oak with silver-plated bronze, brass and steel mounts. Of rectangular shape with hinged top and handle, protruding base and four curved supports. A finely engraved cartouche-shaped lock plate opens by pushing a button which activates a spring mechanism to reveal the keyhole. The box contains a loose paperweight, a mahogany veneered oak panel with a silver-plated knob handle. The right side of the base contains a shallow secret compartment which can be opened by pushing a hexagonal button placed in the inner right side. The exterior decorated with five panels of rhombus mosaic inlays framed by silver-plated metal stringing. H 19.5, W 25.1, D 16.2 cm.
Neuwied, around 1755 – 60.
