A bronze lampstand base, a bronze inkwell and a silver-inlaid oil lamp,

Khorasan, North East Iran, 12th-13th century

The lampstand of typical form ; the oil lamp, on tall conical foot inlaid with foliate motifs within rectangular tapering panels, a band of spare heads above and of scroll works below, some inlay remaining, the half globular body with three spouts and central shaft, the inkwell of squat and truncated ogival form, the lightly gadrooned body with four wider calligraphic bands, similar calligraphy to the shoulder,

the lampstand base 18.8cm. across, the inkwell 9cm., the oil lamp 11.5cm. high (3)

He was Khalili Professor Emeritus of Islamic Art at SOAS, University of London from 1991 and a published author. In his later years, he was Honorary Curator of the Nasser D. Khalili Collection of Islamic Art.
