A bronze prutah of Pontius Pilate, procurator of Judea...
A bronze prutah of Pontius Pilate, procurator of Judea under Tiberius – rare hybrid coin. Obv.: Lituus (divining rod) surrounded by Greek inscription [T]IBEPIOY KAIC[APOC] ('of Tiberius Caesar'). Rev.: Simpulum (Roman cultic ladle) surrounded by Greek inscription [TIB]EPIOY KAICAPOC L[Iς] ('of Tiberius Caesar, year 16').
Among the coins of Pontius Pilate, there are some hybrid specimens – a combination of coin types from the same mint. The above is a fine example showing the obverse of the lituus type with the obverse of the simpulum type.
30-31 C.E. 2.47 grams, 16¾ mm, axis 12. Cf. Ya'akov Meshorer, A Treasury of Jewish Coins (Jerusalem 2001), pl. 75, no. 337
