A buff sandstone relief of an attendant figure
11th century; Rajasthan or Madhya Pradesh, Central India
Standing in exaggerated contrapposto, the right hand at their hip, the torso centered by the srivastava mark, wearing a long dhoti secured at the fleshy belly with a jeweled pendant belt, adorned with multiple necklaces and armband, the sacred thread looping down and over the left thigh
Figure: 16.5" H x 10" W x 5.5" D; Overall: 20" H x 9.5" W x 5.5" D
Provenance: The Collection of Walter and Nesta Spink, Ann Arbor, MI, by 1967
Exported from India, Export License F 4-1 / 8380 / 66-CAI (3), Box 4, Line 12, granted by S. Rao, Assistant Educational Advisor, Ministry of Education, and by Director General of Government of India, Archaeological Survey of India, New Delhi, in 1966

Other Notes: A similar figure, though not as finely carved, nor as large, from the James and Marilynn Alsdorf Collection, achieved $1,750 at auction (see Christie's sale 19826, lot 106, sold on September 28, 2021).
Condition Report: Light superficial abrasions, especially to protruding areas including the front of the belly and the proper right knee, as expected with this material and age. Losses include the center of the torso, the proper right pectoral muscle, and the fingers of proper right hand. Reddish brown patina overall commensurate with age. Condition reports are offered as a courtesy and are typically published in Moran's catalogue or can be made available upon request. The absence of a condition report does not imply that an item is free from defects or restoration, nor does a reference to particular defects imply the absence of others. Buyers are responsible for determining to their own satisfaction the true nature and condition of any lot prior to bidding. Though buyers are not legally required to inspect lots prior to purchase, failure to do so may constitute a waiver of complaint that an item was not delivered in a condition equal to the existent condition at the auction.
