Property from an Important Collection
A calcified jade ceremonial flanged axe, qi,
Late Shang dynasty
顯赫收藏
商末 玉戚

13.8 cm

Condition Report:
Overall very good condition with occasional minute nicks to the edges and surface scratches; all consistent with its age. Traces of cinnabar and accretion. Attractive patina.

Catalogue Note:
Many small jade axes have been recovered from late Shang sites at Anyang, among them several in the tomb of Fu Hao, ca. 1200 BC, compare Yinxu yuqi [Jades from Yinxu], Beijing, 1982, pl. 25. The small hole indicates that such axes were fastened to a bronze shaft or handle as illustrated by surviving examples, compare a very similar example from the Pillsbury Collection, published in Na Chih-Liang, Chinese Jades: Archaic and Modern, Minneapolis, 1977, pp. 52-53, pl. 15. See another small jade axe of similar elongated form from the Luboshez Collection, illustrated in Harriet McNamee, Chinese Art from the Luboshez Collection, Maryland, 1972, pp. 40-41, pl. 14 and fig. 19.

Harriet McNamee,《Chinese Art from the Luboshez Collection》,馬里蘭,1972年,頁40-41,圖版14及圖19。

Provenance:
Collection of David David-Weill (1871-1952), Paris, coll. no. D.W. 3292.

Sotheby's Paris, 16th December 2015, lot 11.
