A carved and painted wood half hull picture of a two masted brig

[ translate ]

A carved and painted wood half hull picture of a two masted brig, second quarter 19th century, with bowsprit, figurehead and deckhouses, the vessel portrayed with launching masts and flags and possibly off Flamborough Head on the rectangular backboard, within a later stained oak moulding frame, 60cm high, 124cm wide overall

The ship depicted, being two masted was known as a Brig (with square sails on both masts) or a Brigantine (with square sails on the foremast and triangular on the aft mast). In this instance though she is shown with (temporary) launching masts rigged with an assortment of flags -the sequence and position of the flags being entirely arbitrary and purely for occasion. Once a ship was launched, she was either towed to a floating crane, known as a masting hulk or moored alongside a quay in the fitting out bay in a shipyard, for the masts to be set in position and then rigged. It is therefore probable that this model was made to commemorate the vessel's launch

The hull design and colour scheme would suggest a date of the 1820s onward
