A carved schist figure of the seated Teaching Buddha, Ancient region of Gandhara, 2nd-3rd century 灰片岩雕像坐像 古犍陀羅地區,二至三世紀

Finely carved, the Buddha portrayed with a peaceful expression, seated in padmasana, his hands in dharmachakra teaching mudra, attired in gracefully pleated robes, remnants of a circular nimbus behind his head, all on a flared base partially contained in the modern hardwood stand H: 20 1/2 in. (sight); H: 34 in. (stand)

Provenance

PROVENANCE:

Ambassador David Morgan Bane, likely acquired between 1961 and 1964, when Ambassador Bane served as consul general in Lahore, Pakistan
Thence by descent

NOTE: Compare the closely related figure of the Teaching Buddha seated, of similar scale, and with similarly carved draped robes, sold at Christie's, New York, March 18, 2015, lot 4005 where it is noted that the draped robes are similar to an example in the British Museum, illustrated in W. Zwalf, "A Catalogue of Ghandhara Sculpture in the British Museum", 1996, pp. 87-88, fig. 24; compare also the larger 32" example, sold at Christie's, New York, March 14, 2013, lot 202.
