A late Victorian silver bachelor three piece tea set, including a teapot, twin-handled sugar bowl and cream jug, each of tapered facetted form with applied scroll rim, the cream jug and sugar bowl with foliate capped flying scroll handles, the teapot with foliate carved stained wood handle, the bowl and teapot raised upon four pad feet, the cream jug upon three, hallmarked Henry Matthews, Birmingham 1895, together with a pair of late Victorian silver scissor action sugar nips, hallmarked Henry Matthews, Chester 1895, all contained within a dual hinged fitted case. Height of teapot inclusive of handle measuring 5 2/8 inches (13.5 cm), gross weight 18.6 ozt (578.8 grams). In good overall condition, the lot displays general surface scratches, marks, wear and tarnishing commensurate with the age and use. The stained wood handle on the teapot is slightly loose at the top fixture point. The sugar bowl and cream jug have silver-gilt interiors which have heavier areas of tarnish around the edges. Minor compression to the interior of the sugar bowl from one of the feet with slight variation to the applied scroll rim which appears plainer to the cream jug and teapot. Visible signs of repair around the feet on all three pieces. All pieces would benefit from a clean and polish. The fitted case shuts securely with minor scuffs around the edges, heavier contact wear to the bottom, minor dent to the back and a small piece which has started to lift, it appears discoloured to the interior lining and outer case. Majority of hallmarks clear and legible.
