A chiseled, polished, and varnished bronze sculpture depicting Atlas supporting the world. It rests on a molded, blackened wooden pedestal inlaid with red marble.
Italy. Late 17th century.
H_40 cm
(The globe is missing).
Atlas bears the celestial vault on his shoulders: this is the punishment that ZEUS imposed on him for participating in the Titans’ revolt. A later tradition portrays Atlas as an astronomer, deified for having taught mankind the laws of the heavens. Thus, Homer credits him with the invention of the celestial sphere and the first geometric representation of the apparent movements of the stars.
