A deluxe Italian miquelet rifle from a noble estate, Thomaso Contino, Pinerolo, circa 1720
Two-stage smooth-bore barrel, octagonal then round, in 16.5 mm calibre. Finely chased decorative tendrils on a gold-inlaid background at both ends of the octagonal barrel segment. Two illegible barrel maker's marks between gold-inlaid leaf motifs at the breech. The tang with deeply etched foliage décor. Lightly engraved, chiselled miquelet lock, the plate signed "Thomaso Contino". The half stock made of lavishly carved walnut with elaborately crafted brass furniture. Abundant acanthus and trophy decoration in relief on a finely chased background, underlaid in silver. Interspersed with antique-style portrait heads in half relief, appliquéd in silver. The coat of arms of the noble Italian "Tasstii" family on the butt cap. One barrel band richly decorated in relief. Wooden ramrod with iron worm. Length 140 cm.
