A deluxe flintlock rifle, Felix Meier of Vienna, circa

Two-stage barrel, octagonal then round with smooth bore in 15 mm calibre. The upper side of the barrel decorated with tendrils inlaid in silver, at the breech standing huntsman with rifle and dog. Engraved tang, the screw missing. Finely engraved lock with depiction of Diana and Cupid with two hunting dogs in an expansive landscape. Underneath the pan inscription "In Wienn". Carved stock of beautifully grained boxwood, converted from full stock to half stock during the time of its use. The forestock incomplete, the original nose of the full stock enclosed. The fittings of fire-gilt brass decorated in rich relief with engraved and chiselled hunting scenes. Engraved barrel band of gilt brass. Wooden ramrod with horn tip. Length 150 cm.
Provenance:Private collection of the renowned weaponry expert Hans Schedelmann, who ascribed the rifle to the Viennese gunsmith Felix Meier, who worked from 1702 to 1939.
