LOT 139A

A fantastic Roman marble head of an athletic victor

[ translate ]

A fantastic life-size Roman marble head of an athletic victor, Roman Greece, 2nd - 3rd Century AD, wearing the pine crown of the Isthmian games. The features are skillfully carved with wavy hair and detailed curly beard in an attractive fashion. The treatment of the hair and beard resembles imperial portraiture from the period of Gallienus to Diocletian (Pre-Tetrarchy), with the beard in ringlets. There appears to be some light cleaning and polishing to the face, as was common in the 19th and early 20th century. This bust would have originated in Greece where the Isthmian games were played, during the period where Greece was under Roman rule. With old, heavy stone base, likely of black marble. This wonderful piece evokes a sense of power, and stands at 13 1/3 in (34cm) itself and 22 1/5 in (56.4cm) with the base. Ex Wiltshire, UK private collection.
