A fine Baradelle silvered brass inclining dial, French, early 18th century,
signed Baradelle A Paris Cadran Universal, the top plate carries an hour scale (XII-VII-XII), engraved a round an opening for the 8-point compass mounted on the lower plate with a declination scale, 30-0-30, fitted with an adjustable index, engraved below it. The latitudes of Tours, 47° 23, and Orléans, 47° are also given, and there is a support for the string-gnomon. At the bottom right corner of the upper plate is a slot through which the folding latitude strut passes. The reverse of the plate is engraved with the names and latitudes of fourteen places, 3 1/8in x 2 1/4in x 1/2in (8cm x 5.6cm x 1.5cm)
