A fine Celtic bronze axe, Western European
A fine Celtic bronze axe, Western European, c. 1400 - 1200 BC, cast from a two-part mold, with heavy flanges and rounded sides, the splayed blade is beveled on either side and continuing onto the ends of the flanges; the back side slightly tapers and is cut flat. L: 6 3/8 cm. (16.2 cm). A great example of the type! Cf: Hayes, Ancient Metal Axes…European and Mediterranean Types, Royal Ontario Museum, pl 12, no. 21 for an identical example found in Perigueux, France; Ex South German private collection.
