A fine English wool and silk needlework band sampler, third quarter 17th century, the plain linen ground embroidered with multiple bands of stylised foliage, interlaced strapwork and flowerheads, above a further band with the alphabet, indistinct date and initials; the lower section comprised of 'whitework' patterns, framed and glazed, 69 x 28cm overallA band sampler with similar colour use dated 1663 is in the collection of the Glasgow Museums, the Burrell Collection, inventory number 31.20.An example incorporating bands of monochrome 'white work' embroidery, as with the lower section of the present lot, is in the same collection, number 31.22.A similar sampler was sold at Christie's South Kensington, the Roger Warner Collection (part 1), 20-21 January 2009, lot 494, £1,375.
