A fine Renaissance mortar by the Hachmann workshop in Cleves, dated 1613Cast in bronze with a beautiful, chocolate brown age patina. The cylindrical body with a spreading base and rim. Two handles in the shape of double dragon's heads on the sides. A banner running around the base inscribed with the date "ANNO DOMINI 1613". The body embellished with angels and putti in relief. A banner on the rim inscribed with the owners' names "Gerrit Alefs * Christina Garbris". Height 14.6 cm, weight 5.8 kg. Extraordinarily well preserved mortar with sharp relief, not rubbed, and an excellent patina. Wilhelm Hachmann (1560 - 1615) took over the famous foundry workshop in Cleves belonging to his father Albert Hachmann.Condition: I - II
