A fine bronze figure of Avalokitesvara Sadaksari,
17th/18th CenturyH: 12.7cm, W: 8.3cm

A fine bronze figure of Avalokitesvara Sadaksari,
17th Century or earlier
The four armed deity seated on a double lotus plinth, with a long incised inscription in Tibetan around the sides just above the base, the dark patina painted over in gold on the feet and upper body,wood stand

The Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara Sadaksari, the Bodhisattva of infinite mercy, is believed by the Tibetans to reincarnate as the Dalai Lamas.

These two fine Tibetan bronzes appeared on the BBC Antiques Roadshow on Sunday 27th February 2022,when they were brought in by the owner, and received high praise.
They have a family provenance to the owner's grandfather, Yang Yong Tai, a Chinese Provincial Governor in the 1930s,who received them as a diplomatic gift from a Tibetan emissary.
There is a tragic story attached to these pieces, for
Yang Yong Tai was assassinated in 1936 in Hankow, by agents of Chiang Kai Shek.

来源:国民政府高级官员、前湖北省政府主席杨永泰(1880-1936)旧藏,由西藏使者赠予。杨永泰于1936年在汉口被蒋介石暗杀后,此佛像在家族传承至今。拍品曾在2022年2月27日登上BBC《鉴宝路秀》节目,获得专家一致赞赏。
Very good condition, with tiny scratch on one foot, minor crackle in the cold colouring on the neck and back. Still sealed.
