A fine late 17th or early 18th century carved and undercut giltwood frame, probably Roman
compound profile; with clasps at the back edge; with a flowering vine along the top edge; the whole moulding between back and sight edge held in a centered trompe l'oeil spiral of elongated acanthus leaves which seem to spring from the alternating sunflowers or groups of florets at the corners, and terminate where sprays of flowers mark the centres; with finely-cut acanthus leaves and buds at the sight edge; the whole re-gilded

Overall: 126.2 x 173.5 cm.
Rebate: 99.2 x 146.7 cm.
Sight size: 96.7 x 144 cm.

Condition Report:
Prospective buyers are encouraged to inspect the property at the pre-sale exhibition, where every lot is available for inspection. Bidders acknowledge that many lots are of an age and type which means that they are not in perfect condition, and the absence of reference to the condition of a lot in the catalogue description does not imply that the lot is free from faults or imperfections.

Clients are advised that all frames should be carefully inspected personally (or by an independent expert on their behalf) – as what constitutes a major repair or damage may prove to be a matter of personal judgement and may not be visible in online images available on Sotheby’s website for the relevant lot. Prior to bidding, clients should satisfy themselves as to both the condition of the lot and the accuracy of its description. All lots are offered for sale in the condition they are in at the time of the auction.

If unable to view the frames personally, more detailed photos are available by emailing oldmasterconditionreports@sothebys.com

Provenance:
Sale, London, Sotheby's, 3 July 2019, lot 35 (when on Antonio Joli, Venice, the Bacino di San Marco looking east), where acquired.1
