A fine mid Victorian yellow and white metal diamond and pearl set brooch in the form of a scallop shell. The central single white pearl framed by radiating rows of diamonds, each section set initially with rose cuts, and then with old mine cuts as the sections widen.
Brooch fastening is a C clasp, and a later addition. 28 old mine cut diamonds and 27 rose cut diamonds. Over 2.5ct total diamond weight. Brooch length, approx. 32mm. 9.7g.
Condition Report: Unmarked. Clasp secure. At the very base of the brooch there is a small hinged bail (1mm) beneath the small bezel set diamond, possibly indicating the piece was once part of a convertible set, or simply remains from its previous purpose. When the bail is tucked up, it is not visible from the front, and there are signs that it was once soldered down for this reason. There is wear to the metal, front and back, as expected, but the diamonds are bright and secure. There is one rose cut missing from the very bottom of the piece, just to the top left of the lowest bezel set diamond, but this is almost imperceptible.
