[ translate ]

The interesting and unusual combination of a Great War trio with a very fine representation of the Malta George Cross possessed by David Moffat, M.B.E., Denbigh Yeomanry and Civil Service: 1914-15 Star (238 PTE. D. MOFFAT, DENBIGH. YEO), very fine; British War Medal 1914-20 and Victory Medal (238 PTE. D. MOFFAT. R. 1-DEVON YEO.), good very fine; copy George Cross, engraved silver or white metal, the ribbon with a top fitting in the form of a scrolling banner engraved "HIS MAJESTY'S GRACIOUS MESSAGE", in a fitted and glazed frame above a separate plaque engraved with the text of King George VI's letter of April 15th 1942: "TO HONOUR HER BRAVE PEOPLE I AWARD THE GEORGE CROSS TO THE ISLAND FORTRESS OF MALTA TO BAR WITNESS TO A HEROISM AND DEVOTION THAT WILL LONG BE FAMOUS IN HISTORY", frame with a further plaque engraved "WITH COMPLIMENTS FROM NATIONAL AND SOCIAL SERVICE VALETTA OFFICE STAFF MALTA 2-8-43"; together with the grant of dignity for David Moffat's M.B.E. (breast badge not included in lot), a valedictory poem hand written and illuminated on vellum for Mr Moffat when he departed for Malta on the 27th of November 1942, and some associated news cuttings.

(round medals 36 mm)

David Moffat served during the Great War in the Denbigh Hussars and the 1st Royal Devon Hussars, deploying to Egypt on the 10th of July 1915. Following his demobilisation in 1919 he entered the Civil Service, and later became a District Officer of the Assistance Board (an early form of social service), working in industrial areas of Great Britain. In the Second World War he served in a Public Assistance role in the East End of London during the Blitz. He was made an M.B.E. in the 1941 Birthday Honours, before being posted to Malta in November 1942, where he was at the forefront of the establishment of a new social service plan for the beleaguered and deprived people of the island in the wake of the Battle of Malta. Though the replica George Cross offered here does not bear a personal dedication to Mr Moffat, it was presented to him by the - presumably very small - department of which he was a prominent member, and it seems likely either to be one of a small number of similar crosses, or even unique.
