The shallow rectangular box with rounded edges and corners, the cover decorated with a box and fruiting peach branch against a dark textured ground, the interior of the cover with two scrolls and a book, one scroll slightly unfurled, revealing a finely-executed landscape; the interior fitted with a pair of side-by-side trays, further decorated with a box and rolled scroll, one side inset with a water dropper and inkstone; Japanese wood box

According to a letter on Christie's letterhead, dated October 17, 1997 accompanying the present lot, the Hartman sazuribako and the present lot were originally in the same collection, and may have originally been a set.
