A finely painted blue and white 'lotus' dish,
Ming dynasty, Yongle period

potted with rounded sides rising from a short tapered foot, finely painted to the interior with an undulating lotus scroll bearing six blooms, surrounded by another lotus scroll and a classic band, the exterior similarly decorated with a chrysanthemum scroll between a keyfret and classic scroll, the base left unglazed

28 cm

Condition Report:
Minor restoration to a section of the rim (approx. 13.5x3.5cm), to consolidate hairlines and fill in some small losses. Another minor restoration to a star crack (approx. 3.5cm) on the rim. The footring with an approx. 3cm hairline.

Catalogue Note:
The present dish exemplifies the quality and simple vigour that characterises Jingdezhen blue and white porcelain of the Yongle period, with the lotus scroll motif expertly painted and positioned that is aesthetically most pleasing. The design appears to spread into the surrounding space with rhythmic dynamism. While plants on early fifteenth-century porcelain are generally naturalistically rendered, the lotus is commonly depicted in a stylized form with fancy curly leaves, as seen on the centre of this piece.

Dishes of this design but of this small size are rare. See a similar dish of comparable size formerly in the collection of L.A. Basmadjeff and Meiyintang, sold twice in our rooms, first in our London rooms, 14th March 1972, lot 129, and again in these rooms, 4th October 2011, lot 24. Compare also a dish from the Ardebil Shrine, Iran, included in John Alexander Pope, Chinese Porcelains from the Ardebil Shrine, Washington, D.C., 1956, pl. 36, bottom right.

John Alexander Pope,《Chinese Porcelains from the Ardebil Shrine》,華盛頓,1956年,圖版36(右下)。

Provenance:
Christie's Hong Kong, 8th October 1990, lot 420.
