A fragment of a French Romanesque limestone frieze
A rectangular fragment of hewn, light grey limestone. Two circular motifs on the front with an intertwined, beaded band border. On the left, the figure of a bearded man in half relief, fighting a dragon, an ornamental floral motif on the right. Knocked in places. Dimensions 15 x 28 x 7 cm.Includes a written expertise by Mrs. Jacqueline Boccador, attributing the fragment to the sculptors of Cluny Abbey on account of its unmistakable stylistic features.Provenance: Collection of Mr. & Mrs. Gabrielse, Middelburg (NL), acquired October 1998.Condition: II - III
