A fragment of a Roman oblong-oval silver lanx, 2nd

Halved oblong-oval lanx with lateral handles in the form of stylised leaves. The fish engraved in the oval central circle indicates the function of the plate. Intentionally halved. Formerly part of the silverware in a wealthy Roman household, the halving was probably carried out when dividing the loot in the course of barbarian invasions. Rare! Maximum width 11.3 cm. Length 45 cm. Weight 0.46 kg.
Provenance: From a private collection in South Germany. Acquired on the European art market in the 1970s and 1980s.
