A glass goblet commemorating King Frederik IV of Denmark and Norway

Smooth, round base supporting a hollow baluster shaft and tapering cup. The display side decorated with the crowned F4 monogram, the reverse engraved "VIVAT REX DANIAE". The sides with cut floral motifs, each surrounding a lense. Foot attached. H 26 cm.
Brandenburg and/or Lower Silesia (Schreiberhau/Szklarska Poreba), 1699 - 1730.

Frederik IV (1671 - 1730) was the eldest son of King Christian V of Denmark and his wife Charlotte Amalie of Hesse-Kassel. The Great Northern War took place during his reign. He was allied with August II of Saxony and Poland and Tzar Peter I. The war ended with a victory for the allies in 1720, and this goblet may have been produced to commemorate this occasion.

In her essay, Susanne Netzer published a Brandenburg glass the initials C5 for Frederik's father Christian V in the Nationalmuseum Lyngby. Due to similarities to the decor of other cups in the catalogue, she has proposed an origin in Bohemia. The cut decor of this cup can be securely attributed to Schreiberhau/Szklarska Poreba and may even have been carved by Hans Christoph Richter.

Literature

Cf. Keisch/Netzer, "Herrliche Künste und Manufacturen", Berlin 2001, illus. 9, p. 71 and nos. 131 ff. Cf. also cat. no. 162.
Cf. also: Zelasko, Barock und Rokoko im Hirschberger Tal. Stein- und Glasschnitt 1650 - 1780, Passau 2014, no. 157, for a goblet in the Glasmuseum Passau, circa 1700, decorated by Hans Christoph Richter.
