A gold and polychrome lacquer 'curiosity' box and cover
Qing Dynasty, 18th/19th century
清十八/十九世紀 描金彩漆折枝花卉紋攢盒

of elongated quatre-foil shape, the cover painted with three oval panels painted with a flower spray and two flower baskets, all on a diaper pattern ground continuing to the sides, opening to reveal a set of three pairs of shaped smaller boxes and covers arranged around a central oval box and cover, two painted with baskets of flowers, and four painted imitating a gold fan decorated with sprays of lotus, prunus, cherry and peony flowers, all arranged around a central oval-shaped box and cover decorated with a diaper pattern framed by a green leaf border, the inside of both box and cover painted black

Length 35 cm ; 13 3/4 in.

Condition Report:
The lacquer on the cover suffused with numerous folds and wrinkles, colours slightly faded. Losses to the lacquer along the edges and raised parts of the cover. The inside boxes in overall good condition, the box itself with small losses to the lacquer along the edges.
